UArizona Continuing Professional Development Policy
An institutional commitment to continuous learning and innovation enhances the University of Arizona's ability to fulfill its mission of teaching, research, and service. In support of that commitment, all full-benefits-eligible employees are provided at least 16 hours of paid release time annually to pursue professional development opportunities. Release time is prorated for those who work less than 40 hours per week.
College of SBS Professional Development Program
The college is providing structured time for all employees to dedicate to professional development training. This is in service to our strategic plan commitment to Investing in our People. It is also part of the Action Plan we developed in response to the Staff Smart Design Taskforce and Recommendations.
We encourage units to set aside 3-hour slots on a Monday or Friday every other month, for the purpose of participating in a supervisor-approved training. The goal is to support uninterrupted common training times across the Dean’s Office. The professional development training can be completed individually or with an accountability buddy, even if they are not completing the same training.
STEP 1: Choose your training
If you have specific trainings that you’ve been wanting to complete, great! Go to Step 2. If you need ideas for possible trainings, download the provided staff professional development resource list.
STEP 2: Supervisor approval
Have a conversation with your supervisor to discuss the proposed training and its relevancy to your role and professional development.
STEP 3: Choose a time to complete the training
Example: 3-hour slots on a Monday or Friday, every other month. It’s also recommended to block off meeting room space so groups can work during that time.
STEP 4: Complete Feedback Form
After each training you will complete a feedback form about your selected professional development training. The purpose of this form is to communicate with supervisors and team members about whether the training was helpful for professional growth, and if you would recommend the training to others. In addition, the form will help leadership determine if continuing the structured professional development time will be beneficial.
